Gopalganj, December 19th 2024, Namo Narayan Mishra: In a shocking incident, 22 individuals have been arrested for attacking a police team in Gopalganj’s Barhara village under the jurisdiction of Gopalpur police station. The arrested individuals have been sent to judicial custody as authorities continue their investigation into the violent clash.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from a longstanding land dispute between two parties, namely Satyanarayan Singh and Jagan Bhagat, both residents of Barhara village. According to sources, two days ago, during a hearing at the Gopalpur police station, a heated argument broke out when Rajdev Kushwaha, the son of Jagan Bhagat, allegedly tore documents belonging to the opposing party. This led to the hearing being adjourned.
The tensions escalated on Wednesday morning when Rajdev Kushwaha was reportedly abducted and beaten by the rival group while he was on his way out of his home. Upon learning about the incident, Rajdev’s family informed the local police, who promptly arrived at the scene to rescue him. However, while the police were escorting Rajdev to safety, they were confronted by villagers who began hurling stones and bricks at them.
The situation quickly spiraled into chaos, prompting the police to use force to disperse the crowd. In the ensuing scuffle, a dozen villagers sustained injuries, and six to seven police personnel suffered minor wounds. All injured individuals were treated at a local hospital.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Awadhesh Dixit confirmed that 22 individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on the police team. An FIR has been lodged against 76 people involved in the incident. The SP stated, “The attack stemmed from a land dispute that led to one party abducting and assaulting a member of the other group. When police intervened to rescue the abducted individual, they were attacked by villagers. Arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.”
All 22 arrested individuals have been sent to jail as police continue their efforts to maintain order in the area.
