At a Full Court meeting of the Patna High Court presided over by Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice Sudhir Singh, it was resolved to take necessary steps to enhance the retirement age of Judicial Officers from 60 years to 62 years.
The Full Court meeting of the Patna High Court was held on 18th August 2026, under the chairmanship of Acting Chief Justice Sudhir Singh. The meeting took an important decision regarding the proposal to increase the existing retirement age of Judicial Officers in Bihar by two years.
The initiative has been taken pursuant to the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the proceedings relating to All India Judges Association & Ors. v. Union of India & Ors., concerning the service conditions and other aspects of the subordinate judiciary.
Following the Full Court decision, the Registrar General of the Patna High Court, through a letter dated 31st August 2026, informed the Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Bihar, about the decision and requested necessary action at the Government level.
Judicial Officers May Get Two Additional Years of Service
If the proposal is implemented after completion of the necessary process by the Government of Bihar, the retirement age of Judicial Officers in the State would increase from 60 to 62 years. The move could allow the judiciary to benefit from the experience of serving Judicial Officers for an additional two years and help maintain continuity in judicial administration.

The Full Court meeting presided over by Acting Chief Justice Sudhir Singh is central to this development. Following the decision at the Full Court level, the proposal now moves to the Government of Bihar for the necessary legal and administrative process before it can be implemented.
