Patna, 10th December of 2024, Suman Kumari: To celebrate International Human Rights Day and the 16th Foundation Day of Bihar Human Rights Commission, the State government had arranged a Legal awareness programme in all jails across Bihar on December 10, 2024. This function was jointly led by the Bihar Human Rights Commission and the Bihar State Legal Services Authority.
It was taken in collaboration with the auspices of Inspector General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Home Department (Prisons) which had also sent guidelines to every state prison to participate within the scheme. The program of awareness was conducted all over prisons simultaneously from 12:30 PM till 3:00 PM.
There were various noted visitors who attended the program such as the Secretary of BSLSA, panel advocates of District Legal Services Authorities and so on. They taught them regarding their human rights and the attendant legal entitlements and concomitant duties.
On the whole, 47,763 male prisoners and 1,895 female prisoners have benefited in their name so reaching close to almost around 50,000 prisoners present all over Bihar on a particular day with crucial legal awareness.
Special Food Arrangements for Prisoners For making the programme more meaningful and for showing humane touch, special food items like puri, halwa, chana & vegetables were arranged in all prisons of the state. This was done through Inspector General of Prisons & Correctional Services and with assistance from each prison head at their level in prison.

Along with that, leadership and direction were provided by Pranav Kumar, Inspector General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Shipli Soniraj, Secretary Member of BSLSA, Gayatri Kumari, Joint Secretary, BSLSA, Anupama Kumari, Registrar, BSLSA, Rajesh Kumar, Secretary, Bihar Human Rights Commission, Mahesh Kumar Das, Joint Secretary, Bihar Human Rights Commission, among others.Further it has been consolidated by the teamwork of senior officials like Avinash Kumar Jha, Under Secretary of the Bihar Human Rights Commission, Jitendra Kumar, Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Sector), and Rajiv Kumar Singh, Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Muzaffarpur).
It highlighted the fact that state and legal structures were dedicated to not only educating prisoners of their rights but also gifting them such information to lead with dignity. It has maintained following through in human rights awareness implementation from grassroots to Bihar levels, reaching prison inmates among the vulnerable groups.
This collaborative effort is a vital step forward for dignifying and raising awareness about the prisoners, and so it is about human rights advocacy in Bihar.
