Doctor and Compounder Die After Alleged Consumption of Spurious Liquor in Begusarai; Administration Under Scrutiny

11th December 2024, Begusarai, Jeevesh Tarun: Once again, the prohibition-enforced state of Bihar witnesses another suspected case of deaths due to liquor consumption in Begusarai. The incident raises serious questions about the administrative machinery. However, the authorities have not yet confirmed whether the deaths were caused by liquor consumption

The deceased have been identified as Dr. C.C. Singh, a resident of Mehda Shahpur under Cheriya Bariarpur Police Station, and his compounder Hare Ram Tanti. Notably, while Dr. Singh’s body was not sent for post-mortem, a post-mortem examination of Hare Ram Tanti was conducted under the supervision of a team from the health department.

According to Begusarai Civil Surgeon Dr. Pramod Kumar Singh, Hare Ram Tanti was brought to Dr. Singh’s clinic earlier when he had reportedly lost his eyesight. The family disclosed that Tanti was a habitual drinker. This has led to speculation that spurious liquor might have caused his death. However, the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is released.

If it is established that both deaths were due to liquor consumption, it would highlight the inefficacy of the police in enforcing prohibition laws. This incident points towards the unchecked activities of liquor mafias, who continue to manufacture and sell spurious liquor in the state.

It is worth noting that both deceased individuals were associated with healthcare services, with Dr. Singh running a private medical practice.
