Government Backs MedTech as a Strategic Sector, Aims for $30 Billion Market by 2030 India to Expand Global MedTech Share to 10-12% by 2030 – Union Minister of State
National Desk,New Delhi, January 31st 2025:MedTekon 2025, the flagship event of the Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI), brought together policymakers, global dignitaries, investors, and healthcare leaders at Taj Palace, New Delhi. With a core focus on Investments, Reforms, and Synergies, the event aimed to accelerate policy advancements, boost investments, and drive technological innovations in India’s MedTech sector.
India’s MedTech Growth Vision
Speaking at the event, Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers emphasized:
“It is an honor to inaugurate MedTekon 2025, a platform uniting industry leaders, policymakers, and healthcare stakeholders to shape the future of India’s MedTech sector. With the industry projected to double its market size to $30 billion by 2030 and expand its global share from 1.65% to 10-12%, India is rapidly emerging as a MedTech powerhouse. Our exports reached $3.8 billion last year, demonstrating the sector’s growing manufacturing strength and global competitiveness. As we drive this momentum forward, collaborative efforts in innovation, investment, and policy reforms will be crucial in positioning India as a leader in affordable, high-quality medical technology.”
Dr. V. K. Paul, Member, NITI Aayog, while addressing the session on Catalyzing Foreign & Domestic Investments in MedTech, highlighted:
“MedTekon 2025 is a vital platform to expand India’s global footprint, foster innovation, and strengthen domestic manufacturing. With the rising demand for medical devices, India must strategically position itself as a global MedTech leader. More than 4,000 health-tech startups in India need greater investment, regulatory support, and structured incubation to scale globally. Additionally, harmonizing regulatory standards with global benchmarks is essential for investor confidence and sectoral growth. By prioritizing innovation, investment, and policy stability, India can solidify its position as a leader in affordable, cutting-edge medical technology.”
Industry Leaders Call for Investment-Friendly Policies
Pavan Choudary, Chairman, MTaI, stressed the importance of investment-friendly policies, regulatory coherence, and a strong MedTech infrastructure to support India’s growing healthcare needs.
“At MTaI, we believe that sharp advocacy stems from thoughtful deliberation, and MedTekon 2025 embodies this commitment,” he said.
On a thought-provoking note, when asked if technology was responsible for dehumanization and increased stress, Pavan Choudary disagreed and remarked:
“The rise of Hikikomori (a term used in Japan for people who prefer technology-driven interactions over human engagement) shows that human interactions can sometimes lead to stress and distress. Machines don’t judge and don’t tire, making them preferable to many millions of Hikikomoris worldwide—whose numbers continue to rise.”
