Kaimur, December 20th, 2024, Ajit Kumar: Serious allegations of substandard materials and negligence have surfaced in the construction of a bridge over the Durgaavati River near Machakhia village in Kaimur. Even before its completion, the lower section of a pier was washed away by the river’s strong current, raising safety concerns among locals. Residents warn this could lead to the next major bridge collapse in Bihar.
The bridge, meant to connect villages on one side of the river to schools and facilities on the other, has already become a symbol of mistrust. Residents claim that before the construction began, children used boats to cross the river, which often resulted in accidents. However, they now fear the half-built bridge could lead to a catastrophic loss of lives if it collapses.
Voices of Concern
“This bridge is worse than the boats we used. At least the boats didn’t endanger as many lives as a collapsing bridge would,” said a local.
Arvind Kumar Singh, a resident of Machakhia, shared that the pier’s base has already eroded, leaving the structure precariously supported by its steel framework. He added, “We can’t say when this bridge might collapse.”
Long-Delayed Project
The bridge construction began in 2019 to provide a reliable connection for Machakhia and surrounding villages, especially for students who missed nearly four months of education annually due to boat service halting during monsoons. However, even after five years, the project remains incomplete, and its structural integrity is already in question.
Demand for Accountability
Locals have criticized the construction company and raised concerns with officials about the negligence. They allege that substandard materials are being used, and safety measures are being ignored. With the lower part of the pier already washed away by water, residents fear the entire structure may collapse once the river is in full flow.
Authorities have yet to respond to the allegations. Residents urge immediate action to ensure the bridge’s safety and prevent a potential disaster in the region.
