Patna/ Katihar, Vikas K Ojha, Editor-in-chief, News Life Network, 20th June 2026: A major achievement has been recorded for the Katihar Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) as the construction of the new rail infrastructure between Katihar and Sanauli has been successfully completed. Following a detailed inspection, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), North-East Frontier Circle, Kolkata, has granted conditional authorization for the commencement of public passenger and freight traffic on the newly constructed section.
According to the Provisional Authorization issued on 19 June 2026 by Commissioner of Railway Safety Sumit Singhal, the newly laid railway section from Katihar Yard to Kuretha Yard and Katihar Yard to Sanauli Yard, developed under the Katihar–Kumedpur Doubling Project, has successfully completed all necessary construction and safety requirements. The statutory inspection of the section was carried out between 17 and 19 June 2026.
During the inspection, various aspects including track quality, bridges, signaling systems, electrification facilities, safety installations, and operational readiness were thoroughly examined. Speed trials were also conducted using a special inspection train to assess the performance and safety of the newly constructed track. Following satisfactory results, the CRS found the section fit for public traffic operations.
One of the most significant outcomes of the inspection is the approval for train operations at a maximum speed of 110 kilometres per hour on this section. With the track now capable of supporting higher-speed train movement, railway authorities expect substantial improvements in operational efficiency, punctuality, and line capacity.
Railway officials stated that all major infrastructure works, including station development, track laying, electrification, signaling installations, and allied civil engineering works between Katihar and Sanauli, have been completed in accordance with prescribed technical standards. The newly developed infrastructure is expected to strengthen rail connectivity in the region and facilitate smoother movement of both passenger and freight trains.
Senior railway officials expressed their appreciation for all agencies involved in the execution of the project. They thanked the engineers, technical experts, field staff, and construction companies for their dedication and professionalism. Officials specifically noted that the construction firms had delivered excellent-quality work and played a crucial role in completing the project within the stipulated timeframe.
“The track is now fully prepared for high-speed train operations. The quality of construction and adherence to engineering standards have been commendable,” officials remarked while acknowledging the efforts of the executing agencies.
The completion of the Katihar–Sanauli rail section is expected to benefit millions of passengers across the region. Improved rail infrastructure will enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, increase freight-carrying capacity, and contribute to the economic development of Katihar and surrounding districts.
Railway authorities expressed confidence that the project would significantly strengthen the rail network in northeastern Bihar and serve as an important catalyst for regional growth and development in the years to come.
