Patna, December 18th 2024, Vikas Kumar Ojha: Renowned Maithili playwright and theater artist Mahendra Malangia was honored today with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 for his exceptional contributions to Maithili literature. The award was presented in recognition of his acclaimed book Prabandha Sangrah, a collection of 19 essays exploring essays, discourse, and research in Maithili literature.
While the award was formally conferred by the Sahitya Akademi, Malangia received heartfelt praise and commendations from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Governor Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who lauded his lifelong dedication to Maithili language and culture. They extended their warm regards, encouraging him to continue inspiring future generations.
Mahendra Malangia, a native of Malangia village in Madhubani district, was born on January 20, 1946. Over the years, he has established himself as a towering figure in Maithili literature and theater. He has authored 13 full-length plays, including Gam Nai Sutae and Raja Salhes, along with several short plays, street dramas, and radio scripts. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including fellowships from the Indian Ministry of Culture.
After retiring from a teaching career in Janakpur, Nepal, Malangia dedicated his life to promoting Maithili arts. He founded the Mithila Natak Kala Parishad, a hub for experimental theater and cultural revival. His commitment to Maithili literature and theater has also been recognized with awards and honors in Nepal and across India.
The announcement of the award has sparked widespread celebration among literary and cultural circles. Dignitaries, including journalists, scholars, and fellow artists, have extended their congratulations. Residents of Madhubani expressed immense pride in their native son’s achievements, applauding his enduring contributions to Maithili arts and culture.
