12th December 2024, Dharmendra Kumar, Motihari: In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics trafficking, the Motihari Police, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), have successfully dismantled a drug syndicate operating in the bordering areas of Nepal. The operation led to the arrest of five drug traffickers and the seizure of substantial quantities of heroin and chemicals used to produce brown sugar.
Motihari’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Swarn Prabhat revealed that two smugglers were apprehended in the Chhatauni police station area, while three others were arrested in Ramgarhwa, an area known for its proximity to Nepal. The authorities also confiscated nearly 2 kilograms of heroin from Chhatauni, alongside chemicals used in the production of brown sugar from Ramgarhwa. According to initial estimates, the value of the seized drugs on the international market is around 7 crores INR.
The drugs were reportedly smuggled into Bihar via Nepal, shedding light on the international dimension of the narcotics trade operating along the border. The coordinated operation involved meticulous surveillance and intelligence-sharing between local police and national narcotics agencies, leading to the successful arrest of the suspects.
Drug Trafficking on the Rise in Border Areas
The recent bust is part of a growing crackdown on drug trafficking in East Champaran, an area vulnerable to cross-border drug smuggling due to its proximity to Nepal. Police sources indicate that the region has seen a sharp increase in narcotics-related activities, with heroin, brown sugar, and other drugs finding their way into local markets.
While the police action has been praised for its effectiveness, it highlights the escalating challenge law enforcement faces in curbing the influx of illegal substances from neighboring countries. The involvement of chemicals used in the manufacture of brown sugar raises concerns about the emerging trends in drug trafficking, with smugglers looking for new methods to evade detection.

Speaking about the arrests, SP Swarn Prabhat commended the hard work and coordination between Motihari police and NCB. He stated, “This operation marks a significant achievement in our ongoing efforts to tackle drug trafficking. These arrests and the seizure of drugs are a testament to the dedication of our officers. We will continue to target such illegal activities and ensure that those involved in the drug trade face strict action.”
The police also emphasized that they would continue to intensify their efforts against narcotics in the region, with additional raids and operations planned to uncover more drug networks. The authorities are also working to strengthen border security to prevent further smuggling of illicit substances into Bihar.
