Gopalganj, December 19th 2024, Namo Narayan Mishra: Gopalganj police have launched an intensive campaign against liquor smuggling, resulting in significant recoveries. In separate operations, the Gopalpur police seized a large quantity of foreign liquor from a truck near Sonhula village along the Uttar Pradesh border, arresting one smuggler. Meanwhile, Thawe police recovered liquor hidden in bushes and apprehended three smugglers.
The confiscated liquor, valued in the lakhs, highlights the ongoing challenges of enforcing prohibition in Bihar. Gopalganj, located in western Bihar, has become a hotspot for liquor trafficking due to its proximity to Uttar Pradesh and easy access for vehicles entering from other states. Daily seizures by the excise department and district police underline the scale of the smuggling operations, with Gopalganj emerging as a focal point for such illegal activities despite the prohibition law.
Sadar SDPO Pranjal stated that the district is conducting rigorous vehicle checks as per the directions of the SP. During one such inspection near Sonhula village, Gopalpur police intercepted a truck carrying 1,424 liters of foreign liquor destined for Chapra. The smuggler transporting the consignment was arrested on the spot.
In another operation, Thawe police discovered 387 liters of foreign liquor hidden in bushes and arrested three smugglers connected to the stash. All four individuals have been sent to judicial custody, and further investigations are underway to dismantle the smuggling network.
Police efforts are ongoing, with intensified patrols and stricter checks to curb the persistent issue of liquor trafficking in the region.
