Begusarai, Jeevesh Tarun (Sr. Corespondent): A shocking case of police high-handedness has come to light in Bihar’s Begusarai district, specifically in the Parihara police station area. Allegedly, a minor issue led the station in-charge to brutally assault a vehicle driver, Sunil Kumar, leaving him severely injured. According to the victim, the incident occurred when he was stuck in traffic. The station in-charge arrived at the scene and, without any reason, started hurling abuses and eventually resorted to physical violence. The assault was so severe that bloodstains are visibly scattered inside the vehicle. Sunil Kumar claims that after beating him, the officer seized his vehicle and took it to the police station, preventing him from seeking medical attention that night.
Somehow, Sunil reached Bakhri Primary Health Center the next morning and received initial treatment. He was later referred to Begusarai for advanced medical care due to the severity of his injuries. Sunil also alleged that his vehicle was released only after he paid money to the officer. Begusarai SP Manish Kumar has received a written complaint from the victim seeking justice. Sunil said not only that he was thrashed and left injured, but his vehicle also sustained damage in the incident. An attempt was made to obtain a statement from the in-charge of the Parihara police station regarding the incident; however, he refused to comment.
This episode raises serious questions regarding police behavior and sensitivity. Although DGP Alok Raj had been giving repeated instructions to police personnel to be “people-friendly” and sympathetic towards the public, incidents like this continue to mar the image of the police force. Such acts are only fueling increasing public resentment and eroding trust in law enforcement.
The police’s insensitivity has not only caused Sunil Kumar physical damage but also inflicted significant mental trauma. It remains to be seen whether the Begusarai police administration will act against the accused officer and bring justice to the victim.
